The Pavilions Himalayas
Pokhara, Nepal
Douglas Maclagan's journey to Nepal began as a vacation in the nineties, but it evolved into a lifelong commitment to the country and its people. His initial involvement in social work led to the establishment of children's daycare health centers, a critical initiative that was eventually implemented nationwide. To support these efforts, Maclagan launched a series of hospitality projects, demonstrating his entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to sustainable development. The pinnacle of these projects is The Pavilion Himalayas, a high-end, eco-friendly resort located near the picturesque lake town of Pokhara.
The Lowdown
Nestled in the majestic Himalayas, The Pavilion Himalayas - The Farm is a tranquil sanctuary blending natural beauty with sustainable luxury. The hotel is just a short 20-minute chauffeured drive from Pokhara Airport. From the moment you arrive, you're enveloped in an ambiance of serenity and environmental responsibility. The hotel stands out for its unwavering commitment to eco-friendly practices, with staff embodying this ethos through genuine dedication and warm Nepalese hospitality and authentic experience that truly reflects the heart of Nepal. And if you're up for a little adventure, make sure to visit their sister lakeside property, The Pavilion Himalayas Lake View. Getting there is part of the fun—you take a picturesque boat ride across the serene Phewa Lake. It's a magical start to your stay. The lakeside property offers luxurious tents that give you a glamping experience like no other. It’s so peaceful, and the views of the lake are just stunning.
Luxury-Eco Boutique
The Pavilion Himalayas embrace environmental stewardship with innovative practices that redefine hospitality with its green practices. From the get-go, you’re pampered with organic, biodegradable shower gels, shampoos, and lotions that smell divine and are kind to the planet. With rainwater harvesting and gray-water recycling, they cut down on local water use and recycle wastewater for non-drinking purposes. Energy efficiency is everywhere, with smart lighting, appliances, and HVAC systems keeping things cozy and green. Solar water heating panels? Check. You can enjoy a guilt-free soak knowing you're cutting down on carbon emissions. But the pièce de résistance? Their biogas system. The hotel's impressive biogas system uses manure from their farm animals to produce methane gas, powering the kitchen to cook food grown on-site. It doesn't get fresher than that—straight from the farm to your plate.
This resort not only provides luxury accommodations but also embodies Maclagan's vision of responsible tourism and community support. All profits generated by the hotel are dedicated to supporting Right 4 Children, a Non-governmental Organization (NGO) based in Pokhara, Nepal. By choosing to stay at The Pavilion Himalayas, guests directly contribute to these transformative efforts, helping to build a future where all children, young people, and mothers in Nepal can exercise their rights and reach their full potential.

Stylish Eats
The farm-to-table dining experience was another highlight. They harvest an organic farm, providing fresh vegetables, eggs, and dairy that elevate every breakfast. Indulge in rice pancakes drizzled with Himalayan honey or savor poached eggs with labna, herb salad, and cashew dukka on toast. Fresh lassi, juices, and organic teas and coffees complete the morning spread. For lunch, I savored a delightful and authentic Nepali meal known as dal bhat, a cornerstone of Nepalese cuisine that combines rice with a variety of flavorful vegetables. What made this meal particularly special was its preparation using entirely organic ingredients sourced from their own farm. Each component, from the fragrant rice to the crisp vegetables, was cultivated with care and without the use of harmful chemicals, ensuring not only a delicious dining experience but also a commitment to sustainable agriculture. The hotel's Bhetghat Bar offers a sophisticated ambiance, perfect for unwinding with a wide selection of beverages alongside nature and tranquility.
